ACRE - Abuse, Culture, Religion and Education

In 2009 roshni commissioned a group of drama students from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD), roshni and the young people from RSAMD created and staged the drama production of 'Who's Right' to spread awareness of child protection issues within the ethnic minority communities throughout Scotland.

The production which was staged in Scottish Parliament, explored issues and stereotypes as well as preconceived notions about how abuse is dealt within different cultures. This initiative was designed to encourage a community-led response to child abuse and neglect by hosting workshops and sessions for adults and children from ethnic minority communities to recognise the basic forms of abuse, to encourage others to report abuse and to appreciate the distinction between cultural upbringing and abuse. roshni use the arts to explore such perceptions and attitudes in a secure and non-judgemental setting.

After each drama production, there was an open, honest and sometimes brutally frank Q&A session for community members. In 2009/10 the series of events were hosted in venues throughout Scotland, some in large community halls and others in small community classes. This platform is important for us - to hear the views of community members, and understand areas in which we may need to possibly focus on, at a later date.

ACRE, Abuse, Culture, Religion and Education is a distinctive method which ultimately makes our awareness raising seminars as effective and engaging as possible
