Abuse, Culture & Child Protection:

A crucial part of this approach is the way we also explore how cultural traditions and practices can influence an individual's perception of child abuse whilst examining such topics as:

Learning Outcomes: 

  • Be more informed about the cultural diversity in Scotland
  • Know about the role of Religious and Community Leaders in the protection of children
  • Purpose:

In this session participants will develop their knowledge of the diversity of cultures in their communities. The session is designed to raise awareness of the cultural issues that act as barriers to protecting children in the wider ethnic and minority communities. 

Process: 

The participants will be involved in small group working, small and large group discussion and activities, tutor input.

At the end of the workshop participants will have achieved the following outcomes: 

  • More informed about the level of cultural diversity in Scotland 
  • Have a clearer understanding of cultural difference and its impact on the protection of children
  • Understand and discussed the impact of discrimination on children and families in the child protection system and to develop anti – oppressive practice 
  • Have an awareness of how a child’s race, culture, gender and ability inform an assessment of their needs 
  • Understand how discrimination can impact on children and families in the child protection system

  • Lack of Knowledge (e.g. support services, law, etc)
  • Specific Forms of Abuse (child trafficking, forced marriages)
  • Widespread rumours and myths relating to the cultural differences in child abuse (e.g. Asian and other BME communities have their own internal mechanisms of support and protection, therefore they do not require assistance from any service providers)
  • The “generational gap v culture” debate 

Who should attend: .The training will be suitable for all those working with children and young people in a wide variety of settings, particularly teachers, youth and community workers, childcare professionals and social workers, community organizations, community planning and health partners, community safety partners and young people.

Our aim at roshni is to provide a high quality training service, targeted at statutory and public sector bodies and beyond, as well as with community and voluntary organisations. 

The emphasis is on providing targeted courses and briefings on areas directly related to the work of roshni and ethnic minority communities, building on our expertise and experience. 

Our trainers are highly experienced and knowledgeable in the areas in which they train. Importantly, they are aware of the challenges, background and practicalities of the subject areas where training is delivered. 

The intention is to deliver information in such a way that it has a resonance with the day to day world and work of participants attending each course. We aim to ensure that our training courses are participative, though provoking, practical, stimulating and even fun.

An Introduction to the Data Protection Act

Purpose

This session is designed to provide participants with a broad overview of the Data Protection Act 1998 and how it affects them.

Process

This is a fully facilitated event with tutor input. 

At the end of the workshop participants will have achieved the following outcomes: 

  •  Have a broad overview of the Data Protection Act 1998. 
  •  Have a broad understanding of the roles and definitions contained in the Act.
  • Have an understanding of an individual’s and organisation’s obligations under the Act.
  • Gain some practical advice regarding protecting data covered by the Act.
  • An overview of the Government Protective Marking Scheme.

The programme will include: 

  • Where and how to access support and advice on the Act.
  • The role of the Information Commissioner in the United Kingdom.
  • Case studies to consolidate learning.
  • Practical activities to consolidate learning.
  • Facilitated discussion / debate.
  • Advice on where to obtain solutions to assist compliance with the Act.
 

Data Protection Auditing

Purpose

To give delegates an overview and understanding of conducting a Data Protection Compliance Audit within their organisation.

Process

This is a fully facilitated event with tutor input.

At the end of the workshop participants will have achieved the following outcomes: 

  •  It is recommended delegates complete An Introduction to Data Protection before joining this course.
  • Understand the scope and remit of a compliance audit.
  • Preparing for the audit.
  • Auditing methods.
  • Understanding and assessing risk.
  • Using and making sense of risk matrices.
  • Reporting and making recommendations.
  • Ensuring ownership of recommendations.
  • Follow up auditing.

The programme will include: 

  • Relevant legislation and the role of the Compliance Auditor.
  • Where and how to access support and additional information.
  • Information on the Data Protection Audit Manual.
  • The Audit model is transferrable to any business audit.
