Target Audience:

This course is suitable for frontline staff across all disciplines and at all levels who wish to increase their knowledge, understanding and awareness of the definition of forced marriage and the cultural and religious issues faced by individuals facing forced marriage.

The course will increase knowledge, understanding and awareness of the definition of forced marriage and the cultural and religious issues faced by individuals facing forced marriage. The course will build staff skills, capacity and confidence in dealing with individuals facing or trapped within forced marriages and thus increase the quality of response and support.

The course will explore government policy, the definitions and differences between arranged and forced marriage, the motivation behind and its impact, barriers to reporting and guidance for dealing with cases of forced marriage.

This will include information on the Forced Marriage etc. (Protection and Jurisdiction) (Scotland) Act 2011, Forced Marriage Protection Orders, as well as guidance on good practice for staff and volunteers.

The training course will facilitate frontline workers to feel more confident, competent and aware when working with minority ethnic victims and potential victims of forced marriage and in turn provide appropriate services and support to those individuals.

On completion of the course participants will be more informed on the level of cultural diversity in Scotland and have a basic:

  • Increase awareness of Forced Marriage
  • Dispel myths and stereotypes about Forced Marriage and Arranged Marriage
  • Increase awareness of Arranged Marriage and the difference between arranged and Forced Marriage
  • Raise awareness and understanding of the barriers faced by victims and potential victims of Forced Marriage and the impact this can have on accessing services
  • Increase staff confidence in their ability to respond to victims and potential victims of forced marriage
  • Increase the knowledge and understanding of  the Forced Marriage etc. (Protection and Jurisdiction) (Scotland) Act 2011
  • Build staff skills and capacity to provide a culturally and faith sensitive response
