researchnew

The Ethnic Survivors Forum is a new culturally sensitive service available for minority ethnic communities and professional bodies.

We offer support services for minority ethnic adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, including:

  • A Free telephone helpline – a confidential service that offers support and a listening ear as well as details of local support services
  • A unique interactive website offering information and resources
  • A culturally sensitive Befriending Service.
  • Face to face confidential and free counselling and support

The Ethnic Survivors Forum hopes to work alongside statutory agencies, voluntary organisations and other bodies in pursuit of developing, supporting and influencing the future direction of services for minority ethnic survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

The Ethnic Survivors Forum aims to increase awareness of childhood sexual abuse and its long term consequences within ethnic minority communities and will actively promote a programme of education and awareness raising.

What is Childhood Sexual Abuse?

The involvement of a child in sexual activity that he or she does not fully comprehend, is unable to give informed consent to, or for which the child is not developmentally prepared, or else that violates the laws and social taboos of society. Children can be sexually abused by both adults and other children who are – by virtue of their stage of development – in a position of responsibility, trust or power over the victim.

World Health Organisation, 1999

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) can be an isolated or a recurring event. It may include non-contact and/or contact abuse. Non-contact abuse includes acts such as being watched in private situations for example having a bath, being made to watch pornography as well as a range of other acts. Contact abuse involves inducing or coercing a child to engage in sexual activity. CAS can be disguised as play or it may be more overt assault. The abuser may be a relative, an acquaintance or a stranger.

Sexual abuse is sexually, physically and emotionally abusive.

Child sexual abuse is always wrong.
