YEA Nominees and Award Winners

Caring and inspiring young people don’t often hit the headlines. That’s why we want to celebrate all those young citizens out there who make our communities come alive. We’re looking for someone who’s helped improve the life of others, or someone who’s changed the community. Nominate someone who’s shown how much they care about the community.

Name: Usman Ali (Winner)
Age: 21

Usman is fast becoming well-known
for his passion for politics. From a
very young age, he has volunteered
much of his time to campaigning
and has been involved with
many community and charitable
organisations.
Anyone who has met Usman will
agree that he has all the qualities of
a hardworking, people’s politician
who would lobby tirelessly for their
cause.
In 2010, he wrote a policy proposal
and campaigned to tackle bullying
in Scottish schools, which was
adopted by many councils.
If he isn’t running the country in a
few years, there is no justice.

 

Volunteering

Bubbling with energy and enthusiasm, we can always rely on volunteers to make our world a better place. We’re looking for a volunteer or team of volunteers who deserve the Volunteering award. Nominate someone who deserves the recognition and celebrate their achievements with us.

 

active life club

Name: Active Life Club (Winner)
Age: 19-24

Active life Club (ALC), established
since 1999, is a youth led voluntary
organisation which aims to promote
the social, physical and mental
wellbeing of disadvantaged and
excluded young people aged
between 12 and 25 in Glasgow.
ALC strongly believes in the abilities
and contribution of young people.
ALC provides a range of recreational
and diversionary activities in and
arounf Glasgow.
Activities include sports
programmes, participatory action
research, mentoring and coaching
to build religious and racial
understanding and encourage young
people to become active citizens.
The Club is led by a management
committee of eight dedicated and
inspiring young people.

We all know someone who goes that extra mile to make our homes, schools and communities special. We’re looking for someone who’s made a difference by caring for others, campaigning for better services, or generally making our communities a better place to live. Nominate someone who’s hard work and dedication has made a difference.

 

haroon abbass

Name: Haroon Abbas (Winner)
Age: 24

Haroon has been nominated for his
dedication and hard work whilst
volunteering to raise awareness of
Cancer amongst young people.
He, himself, was diagnosed with
cancer in 2012 and has given time
to help and support others coping
with the illness.
Haroon has campaigned for more
information for young people to
learn about cancer and encouraged
them to take tests if worried.
He has never put himself first,
even when undergoing his own
treatment, and has raised thousands
for charities.

 

sport

Whether its running, jumping, swimming or climbing, young people across Scotland are always buzzing with sporting energy! Keeping fit and healthy needs dedication and passion and deserves to be celebrated. We’re looking for someone who is a real sporting hero! Maybe someone who spends their free time training others in a sport they love. Nominate someone who deserves the Sport and Wellbeing award for their passion and energy.

 

Ahmed Ibrahim

Name: Ahmed Ibrahim (Winner)
Age: 22

Ahmed is a Scottish Muay Thai
boxing champion and a very positive
role model for young people.
He arrived in Glasgow from Kenya
around 12 years ago and lived most
of his teenage years in foster care.
Ahmed has had 26 professional
fights, only losing 4, and competed
in the World Championships in
Russia.
Ahmed has a lot to deal with
recently, including losing his
younger brother in Kenya, but used
his sport to keep focused and be
positive.
He plans to set up a gym that will
introduce more young people from
ME communities to the sport.

 

learning

There is a lot of hard work and success which takes place in Scottish education and we want to reward excellence, improvement and achievement in education. We’re looking for someone who is top of the class, or someone who is working their way up to be the best they can be. Nominate someone and celebrate their brainbox success!

 

Danny Tai

Name: Danny Tai (Winner)
Age: 21

Moving to Scotland only seven
years ago Danny initially struggled
academically due to cultural and
language barriers. Determined to
overcome these barriers, Danny
worked extra hard both within and
outwith school. Danny achieved
excellent Higher Grades and moved
on to study a Business Degree at
the University of Edinburgh. He
has continued to excel, achieving
highest overall marks and a number
of awards including the Alexander
Darling Award.
He dedicates his time to a number
of University clubs and activities
and is an active member of the
International Student Centre (ISC).
In his role at the ISC, Danny assists
in bringing together students of
all nationalities to exchange ideas
and aid better understanding of
culture.

 

arts

Not one for the famous, but for the young stars who have contributed to the arts and cultural lives of their local communities. With such amazing things going on in our communities, we’re looking for people in music, dancing, comedy, performing arts, fashion, visual arts, media, tourism and literature. Nominate the hip-hop dancers, the classical singers and everything in between.

 

Puneet Puri

Name: Puneet Puri (Winner)
Age: 20

Puneet is a successful bhangra
dancer with the Miss Punjabeez
dance group, Scotland’s first female
group which promotes the art of
Punjabi dance and culture.
The group has performed at many
events such as the Bhangra was
competition and Commonwealth
Games Handover.
Puneet has been involved in the
Glasgow Mela and has conducted
workshops in Universities to
promote inclusiveness and harmony
between different cultures.
Puneet’s drive and talent has also
led on to other projects such as
hosting her own show on Awaz FM,
modeling and host of the Capital
Bhangra event.
